Raising Commerical Cross-Bred Cattle
Here at The Broken Arrow, we have been raising commercial
cross-bred livestock since our youth. Since 1981 almost all of
our brood cows are result of select A.I. breeding that is
centered around Simmental, Angus, Red Angus, and Polled
Hereford cross-breeding.
Our Simmental Influenced Cow Herd
Our Simmental influenced cow herd have several daughters,
granddaughters, and great-granddaughters with bloodlines
going back to high performance A.I. bulls. A favorite is CSR MR
Big-N-Long, who was a long time 5-star trait leader in the
breed. Black Mick, who was well known for his black
replacement quality sons and daughters. SV Red Charlie and
Body Builder, for feedlot steers and replacement females.
Also, ER Americana for feedlot performance. We also use
current favorite performance sires with similar traits.
Besides Performance, We Cull On Personality Too!
Our Females were rigidly culled annually for performance,
milking ability, fertility and personality. We kept record of all
our A.I bulls and females performance using C.H.A.P.S. (Cow
Herd Appraisal Performance Software).
Until the last few years, we did our A.I. calving in the late
winter, and in the barn. But, in recent years, we have not
been keeping our replacement heifers. And we have been
selling off our older Cull Cows, to gradually reduce our herd
size. We will probably retire from raising cattle in 2026 or
2027.
